Driving your Career

"If a window of opportunity appears, don't pull down the shade." (Tom Peters)

Background

As yet, most people do not receive focused assistance before facing the demands of a new role (whether coming new to the organisation or as a result of a promotion within).

It would normally be the case that the new role will bring challenges greater than they have been accustomed to, such as:

  • impressing a large number of demanding new stakeholders from day one and consistently thereafter

  • managing a new and possibly bigger team, perhaps dealing with issues that have been building up from the last appointee

  • putting new ways of working in place - making their mark effectively and valuably

  • building strong relationships with new external clients, possibly even more demanding, and perhaps needing to 'make good' any shortfalls from the last appointee

  • confidently managing larger projects, making more important decisions, and influencing more powerfully

  • working even harder, and having even more expected of them, whilst still having only the same number of hours in a week!

Although previously there may have been an allowance for a learning curve, in current times there is very little room if any for such a luxury.

In addition, the old adage "you never get a second chance to make a first impression" applies even more pertinently now, with increased time pressures making instant judgement the norm.

    Consequences

At worst, this could lead to failure (to a lesser or greater extent) for the new appointee, and rightly or wrongly by association, the people involved with the placement - both in the HR Team and any outside service provider. The consequences of all this can involve needless stress, disrupted relationships, and a large measure of financial loss for all parties.

In addition to all this, the organisation will doubtless send the new appointee on training programmes, some of which may involve lengthy absence from the workplace (with a frightening build up of work on their return), significant financial cost, and a question mark about whether the most important and urgent challenges are actually receiving the greatest attention.

"Is there really no better way to handle the opportunity?"

With Launch Pad, all these points and more are resolved. Here's how.

    Launch Pad

Through a number of highly structured yet flexible coaching sessions, the new appointee receives focused relevant support in advance of starting the new role, and can consequently show their intelligent preparation, proactive approach, and unique brilliance right from the start.

This engenders confidence and admiration for their attitude and skills, and also reflects very well on all those associated with the placement. With a series of such excellent placements, the association becomes compellingly strong.

An expertly designed 'Health Check' elicits the prioritised areas for attention. This way, time and expert mentoring support is placed where it will yield the greatest returns on investment.

Full account is taken of necessary key skills (with optimum attention paid to boosting the ones that will make for the greatest impact), attitude shifts required for the new culture, and any enhancements required in personal communication style.

At the end of two sessions, the new appointee will be much stronger and optimally prepared to begin their new role with confidence and enthusiasm. A successful start is assured.

Support is then available via telephone and email, particularly in the first week, and thereafter in a more structured way (face to face as required) to provide further strength, and to enable key wins to be identified and achieved.

The organisation gains hugely from having peak performance come on stream many weeks earlier than usual, and also shows itself through first impressions as a genuinely caring, organised, and attractive employer - a big plus point in its own 'brand value' for attracting the best people!

All this supports the sense of confidence and excellence that signifies a very happy start in a new organisation.
